Fenton Art Glass Limited Edition

Engraved in the Art Nouveau style, this award-winning rose quartz vase created by the Fenton Art Glass Company and hand carved by famed glass sculptor R. Michael Yates.

In the 1980s, R. Michael Yates designed limited editions for the Fenton Art Glass Company’s sand carving division directed by Richard Delaney.

When this limited edition vase premiered in 1983 it was never released to the general public because the edition of 850 pieces sold out before its debut.

The Fenton hand made vase has an inner, grayish-white layer of glass underlying the outer rose quartz layer making it possible for Mr. Yates to carve partially through the outer layer into the lighter colored inner layer creating a subtle, delicate shading effect of the woman's facial features such as her cheekbones. Michael Yates' mastery of the techniques used in intaglio style engraving is strikingly evident.

The vase is signed on the bottom:

Artist's Proof

#1

R M Yates

This is the singular Artist's Proof made of this design. It was personally hand carved by R. Michael Yates. Fenton’s sand carvers used this prototype vase as their standard for carving the 850 pieces in this limited edition.

The vase is 5.5" in diameter, 4" wide at the mouth, and 8.5" high.

The Fenton Art Glass Company entered this vase in the Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators annual awards show in 1983. It won First Place in two categories: "Excellence in Design" and "Excellence in Technique".
